Nabokov was not able to find a US publisher for Lolita when he finished the book in 1953 and it was only in 1955 that the book was first published, in Paris by the avant-garde publisher Olympia Press. Due to its ethically questionable subject matter, Lolita caused public outrage upon its publication and was banned in France in 1956. Despite the scandals, however, it was a best seller when the U.S. edition first came out in 1958; and, with its lucid narratives and Nabokov’s immaculate style, Lolita quickly established its status as a literary classic. The author subsequently translated the book into his native Russian. It is listed in Modern Library’s 100 Best Novels of the 20th Century, and TIME's 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. Adapted into a classic film in 1968 by Stanley Kubrick, and again in 1997 by Adrian Lyne.
