The Art of Advertising celebrates the art of the modern poster from 1910 to today. Showcasing over forty classic, beautiful and sought-after vintage original posters from Europe and Asia, the collection includes pieces designed and issued to promote food and beverages, events (from classic cars to bullfighting in Pamplona), tobacco, fashion, art exhibitions & museums, bicycle tyres, comics and even London bus stops signs.
American graphic designer Paul Rand observed that “a (successful) poster must attract as quickly and boldly as a banner and excite sensations of pleasure and interest in the observerâ€. One feature of The Art of Advertising exhibition is a collection of bright, bold and upbeat mid-century modern posters issued by various European brands between the 1950s-1960s. Clean lines, strong colours and minimal text easily catch the onlooker’s attention, achieving exactly what posters should: a sense of joy and intrigue in the product or service being advertised. Artists featured in this part of the exhibition include Bernard Villemot, Victor Vasarely, Guy Georget and Hervé Morvan for brands including Guinness, Campari, Martini, Perrier, Gitanes, Bally, BP and London Buses.
