Wing Chan uses photomontage for a wide range of artistic expression that is grounded more in painting than in photography. Leveraging photographic technology to capture reality, Chan transforms this into masterful works of art, some imbued with rich elements of Abstract Expressionism, others reflecting a fusion of pop art, street art and graffiti iconography, in which we discover strands of the graffiti art of Jean-Michel Basquiat and the looping figures of Keith Haring. His work dances with rhythms of bold colours and texture; there is no little drama in these images. Chan's works exemplify the importance of artistic sensibility and demonstrate how style can evolve to produce new extremes of creative spontaneity. Born in Hong Kong in 1962, Wing Chan studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and had an award-winning career in commercial design in New York City. In 2011, Chan returned to Hong Kong, and inspired by a wealth of subject matter, he continues to apply his mastery of forms, shapes, colours and textures to the creation of his fine art photomontages. Chan has exhibited his photomontages in Europe and Asia, and they have also appeared in numerous publications worldwide. Enigma is Wing Chan’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.
