[RAILWAY] Map of East China (1901)

Druck/Stanford
48½” x 57”
1901
With original slipcase
B0178

Druck, 1901. With a pasted down label of Edward Stanford, London on the map and the slipcase.  Map dimensions: 48½” x 57”. With original slipcase.

Large fold-out map in German, dissected into 16 pieces, each measuring approximately 12” x 14” and backed onto canvas. A detailed map of the East China coast, showing major cities and terrain. At the bottom there is printed reference to material taken from unpublished works of Ferdinand von Richthofen, a German geographer who made detailed topographical maps of China, and was also the uncle of Manfred von Richtofen, the “Red Baron” flying ace. Manuscript lines and annotations added to the map, which indicate the alignment of the recently constructed and proposed railway lines. Stamped "A.J. Barry" on both map and slipcase. Arthur John Barry was Joint Consulting Engineer on many of the Chinese Railway projects of the time including for Chinese Central Railways, Shanghai-Nanking Railway and Canton-Kowloon Railway. The map is a German original, but was sold by Stanford, suggesting that it may have been issued by Stanford at the specific request of Barry, with Stanford buying the sheets from the German publisher, dissecting and backing it onto canvas, and adding the slipcase. Exceptionally scarce, we can find no institutional holding of this Edward Stanford issue.
