Strange Newes from China, A First Chinese Cookery Book with 101 Rare and Choice Chinese Recipes (1932)
First edition. Octavo, pp 231. Blue cloth covered hard boards, lettering in gilt to spine and upper board. Beautiful Chinese lantern design endpapers. Without the rare dust jacket. More than just a cookery book, the first 84 pages present a rambling introduction as the author describes his adventures exploring Chinese restaurants in 1930's London, learning about the cuisine and food culture. This is followed by 101 recipes of all sorts providing ingredients and method but little in the way of quantities. All enhanced by the author's charming in text drawings. Spine dulled, front board slightly bowed, bookplate to front paste-down, overall a clean and attractive copy in Very Good condition.
