Very Good
Folio sized scrapbook, 34cm x 21cm, brown paper covered boards over blue cloth spine. No lettering or markings outside. 180 pages, filled.

The book was filled by Douglas C. Brown. Among the first entries is his employment letter from Harvey Brothers, where he was employed in the trading company's Indian offices, initially in the south Indian city of Tuticorin . Brown travelled back and forth between India and the UK , before the war by sea and later by air. He also journeyed out-station to Ceylon , Australia , Penang and Shanghai . Around half the book is filled with mementos and clippings during time spent in the UK , mainly in Folkestone. Correspondence includes appointment of membership letters from the Tuticorin Club and Tuticorin Golf Club, and shortly after joining a letter notifying Brown that he was being fined for damaging the Tuticorin Club billiards table. There are many luggage labels, shipping labels, and town plans of places visited in Asia by the compiler. Brown was a 2nd Lieut (Reserve) in the S.P.M. Rifles in India, having previously been a reservist in the U.K. Brown also pasted many clippings in the book of motoring interest, cars purchased, serviced and operated, and a notice of intended prosecution from the Metropolitan police for dangerous driving. There are also hotel bills, theatre programmes, family letters and newspaper clippings both of general interest and some of family interest (marriage and death notices, obituaries, etc) and of people presumably known to Brown.

This is an interesting collection illustrating the life and career of a British man in Asia and the U.K. , from the late 1920's to the early 1950's.
