Inscribed by author to f.f.e.p. Christopher Rand was a correspondent for New York Herald Tribune and frequent contributor to The New Yorker. Here, he writes about Hong Kong based on his travels there from 1949, at a time when the colony was recovering from World War II and the Communist regime had just taken over across the border.

This is a gifted reporter's impression of the tiny, crowded, melodramatic British colony on China's southern coast...It is a city crammed with refugees, secret agents, propagandists, speculators, and great legitimate business enterprises...
