HONG KONG - NORTHWEST ORIENT (1970's)

Printed in the USA
63cm x 101.5cm
1970's
Linenbacked. Grade: A-, near fine condition. Very minor edge wear before linenbacking and short restored (almost invisible) tear at centre
T3003

Uncommon early 1970's photo format poster from Northwest Orient with a working junk in Hong Kong harbour. The harbour car ferry can be seen between the sails which was the only way to bring a vehicle across the harbour before the opening of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel in 1972.

The sea, boats and a life living and working on the water has always been an integral part of Hong Kong which in the 1970's would most likely have been experienced by tourist visitors with a trip on the Star Ferry or a meal at one of the floating restaurants in Aberdeen harbour. It is estimated that as many as 150,000 people lived afloat in Hong Kong in 1963 and still as many as 40,000 in 1980.
